Bay Cove Receives $200,000 Grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation

Bay Cove is thrilled to announce that our agency is one of 10 healthcare organizations that have been awarded a total of more than $1.5 million in new grants by The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) Foundation. These grants are designated to support programs that improve access to health care and coverage for vulnerable and low-income residents –including through BCBSMA’s new grant program Expanding Access to Behavioral Health Urgent Care.

“When people get sick in the middle of the night or injured on the weekend when their primary care provider is closed, they can seek non-emergency care at an urgent care center,” said Audrey Shelto, president of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation. “Unfortunately, that option is not readily available in Massachusetts for people seeking urgent, outpatient care for a mental health or substance use disorder. Our goal with the new grant program is to develop an urgent care infrastructure that is parallel to the medical system.”

As the sole provider of emergency behavioral health services on Cape Cod, Bay Cove is receiving a $200,000 grant to support the hiring of additional clinical staff for the opening of a satellite office and mobile crisis team serving communities between Hyannis and Provincetown.

The addition of this new staff will allow Bay Cove clinicians to respond more quickly to emergency calls; conduct more outreach and information sessions to group homes, senior centers, community groups, and clubhouses about the benefits of using our emergency services instead of visits to hospital emergency rooms; be strategically placed in harder to reach parts of the Cape, so that they can be dispatched to calls as needed; and give them the ability to provide more intensive follow-up with patients seen through our emergency services.

Bay Cove is thankful to BCBSMA Foundation for this funding support, and for the opportunity to provide more immediate and comprehensive services to individuals undergoing behavioral health crises.
