Dr. Robert Diener

Chief Medical Officer

Dr. Robert Diener has been a board certified Psychiatrist for nearly thirty years, and has held a variety of positions in clinical leadership in both the inpatient and outpatient communities. He began his career as the Attending Psychiatrist for the Residential Treatment Programs at McLean Hospital. He served as an Attending Psychiatrist, and later the Medical Director of the Bridgewater State Hospital, and as Chief Psychiatrist for the Massachusetts Department of Corrections for nearly a decade. In those roles he helped develop more comprehensive mental health treatment opportunities for individuals with forensic mental health needs. Dr. Diener has extensive forensic experience testifying as an expert witness, providing case consultation in the private sector, and as faculty member in the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship at UMASS. Following his work in the criminal justice system, he returned to direct care as the Medical Director of an inpatient unit at the Carney Hospital in 2015 before joining Bay Cove in 2017 as our Medical Director for Mental Health Services and served in that role for five years prior to being elevated to his current position as Bay Cove’s Chief Medical Officer in 2022.

Dr. Diener received his M.D. from Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his post-graduate training through Harvard Medical School, first as an Intern in Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and then as a Resident in Psychiatry at McLean Hospital. He has held faculty positions at Harvard Medical School, the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and is currently supervising Psychiatry Residents from Tufts University School of Medicine, where he is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry.
