Team Bay Cove Profile: Liz Mahoney

Each year, we’re always thrilled to have bib numbers in the Boston Marathon, and full of admiration and gratitude to the athletes that choose to run for our agency as part of Team Bay Cove.

One of this year’s team members is Liz Mahoney, and she’s running for Bay Cove for the very first time. Liz is pretty fast, but we were able to catch up with her long enough to get to know her a bit and ask her about the excitement of running for Bay Cove on Monday, April 17!

Is this your first marathon? This will be my second marathon. My first was the Cape Cod Marathon in Falmouth in Fall of 2019. We got clobbered with gale force winds and rain, and waves coming up over the sea wall due to the storm, so I was pretty uncomfortable for a lot of the race. But I finished and I was proud! As soon as I crossed the finish line I knew I needed a do-over. Even if we get poor weather for the Boston Marathon, I doubt it would feel as bad as it did on the Cape that day.

What most excites you about running the Boston Marathon? With running and training I enjoy the time in nature, the endorphins, the stress relief, and the me-time… but I most value the confidence it brings. Races for me are all about setting a big goal, then reverse engineering the steps and milestones so that race day goes well. Accomplishing big goals such as finishing a Half Marathon and a Marathon always leave me feeling strong and confident.

Name three songs or musical artists that you need to listen to when you’re running/training. “Let’s Go” by Calvin Harris and Ne-Yo is my #1 energy boosting song! I also have an upbeat running playlist with fun stuff from Christina Aguilera, Jason Mraz, Ava Max, Pitbull, Lady Gaga and more.

Why did you want to run as part of Team Bay Cove? I'm always looking for ways to pair my love of running with supporting worthy organizations, and I know that Bay Cove does great work for so many people in Massachusetts, helping families, kids, and neighbors who need Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, Addiction and Homelessness Services. I welcome the opportunity to help support the mission!
